Shane

What is your name?
Shane Zucker

How old are you?
I’m 24 years old.

Where did you grow up?
I grew in consistent 90 degree weather in South Florida. The only thing I miss about it is the beach.

Tell us one fun fact about you?
I can’t whistle. I’ve tried for years and I just can’t get it. I feel like it would be fun if I could actually figure it out, but until then it’s just a sad fact.

What are your main responsibilities at art house?
I slave away in front of the computer doing the design work, web development, and random technology stuff. I have a feeling that me and Carpal Tunnel are gonna be close friends soon.

How did you and steven meet?
Steven and I met while we were sophomores at Atlanta College of Art. We bonded over a mix of Seinfeld and cookies. The first week or so into the school year, he threw a Seinfeld viewing party. After that, he discovered that I was one of the only dorm rooms with a fancy conventional oven, so almost every day he and his now fiance would knock on my door asking if he could make cookies.

How long have you been doing art house?
It must be 3 or 4 years now. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact time that “Art House” started. The first thing that Steven and I did together was assemble a bunch of artists through Craigslist to rent out space in Atlanta to have an art show. We did that twice and then dove into leasing our own space in Decatur (just outside of the city of Atlanta). That space was when “Art House” first came into play as Art House Gallery and Boutique.

What is your favorite part of art house?
My favorite part is all of you! My second favorite part is all of the mail that we receive almost every day. It’s like christmas going through all of the packages full of artwork. I feel like I should give the mailman a glass of milk and cookies for all his hard work.

In 100 words or less, tell us about yourself!
I graduated from SCAD with a degree in graphic design. I’m a nerd who loves to cook, read about design, and try to find my way around the city without using my iPhone’s GPS (but I always give in). I have a cat conveniently named Little Cat. I’ll kill you in Beatles trivia but probably won’t be able to remember your name until seven or so introductions. I’m also not very good at counting words…

Favorite food?
It changes every week. Now that I’ve moved to New York, I’ve become obsessed with falafels. The first month here was obviously pizza.

One quick fact about you!
I was homeschooled until high school. Steven makes fun of me for it.

Steven

What is your name?
Steven Eric Peterman

How old are you?
24

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in New Jersey in a town called Hillsborough.

Tell us one fun fact about you?
I recently got engaged to the girl I met when I was 16 on a family vacation aboard a cruise ship!

What are your main responsibilities at art house?
Everything! Shane does all the technology and design work, while I run the everyday business. I plan the tours, projects, shows and most of all try to answer all of your emails!

How did you and Shane meet?
On the first day of orientation at the Atlanta College of Art, Shane sat at the table with my parents and I.

How long have you been doing art house?
Very long! I approached Shane in 2006 with the idea of doing little shows where we find artists and rent out a space for the night. We made a $110 dollar profit and thought that was enough to start an entire gallery.

What is your favorite part of art house?
Its been a fun ride since the start. We have met so many amazing people and got to travel the country with thousands of sketchbooks in our trunk. I get to call this work! How awesome is that!

in 100 words or less, tell us about yourself!
I live in Brooklyn with my fiance Sara and our cat Thrifty. I’m madly in love with both of them.

Favorite food?
Chicken fingers. I was a vegetarian for 4 years and i recently had to start eating meat. I missed those chicken fingers!

One quick fact about you!
I never had pie for the first 22 years of my life. Since then I’ve only had it 3 times!

Thanks for listening! We hope this opened your eyes to who we are! Check out the Art House facebook page and write us a quick note, telling us about you!

-Steven and Shane

After much hard work, we are so happy to have released the foundation of our new website. It’s looking pretty bare right now, but in the coming weeks we will be bringing over all of your portfolios, submissions, comments, and other data.

With The Brooklyn Art Library opening this month too, we have a ton of ideas on how to merge both the physical space and the website together. We’re going to work to integrate these features as soon as we can!

Receive notifications when your sketchbooks are viewed in the library or on tour. Starting April 1st, you can sign up to receive email notifications every time your book is thumbed through! Eventually we’re planning on offering the option to receive a text message, too!

Better portfolio piece and submission image management and presentation. In addition to a better presentation of images, you’ll soon be able to crop your images and rearrange them in any order you like.

Visitors inside of The Brooklyn Art Library will be able to see what books other people in the library are currently looking at on monitorsalong with artist information for each book.

Groups based around themes or geographic locations. We’ve noticed that people have been making Facebook groups or finding other ways to communicate and collaborate with other people in projects, so we’re working on adding a central location where people near each other can collaborate and organize meet-ups to work together on their projects.

Free projects submitted through the website. Kind of along the lines of our weekly projects, we’ll be adding projects to the website that are free to participate in, but don’t have exhibitions or any physical work (just images on the site).

Ability to sign your friends up for projects or other groups really easily. We’ve been really excited to have a lot of schools participating recently, and we always get requests from people on how they can sign their friends up for projects or add a group, so we’re working to make the sign up process as easy as possible (after all, the projects make a great gift!)

Paypal! We’re working on bringing back the option to checkout through Paypal.

The above features will all be added in the coming weeks and months. In the immediate future we’re working to bring back all of the content from the old website. We completely rebuilt it from the ground up, so we’re really excited about the possibilities that it brings for the future and hope that it helps make your experience of participating and collaborating better! Now that the website is live, I can catch up on some much needed sleep.

Can you think of anything else?

Are there features you can think of that would help bring the community together or help you feel more a part of the projects? Please let us know in the comments!

- Shane

Hello Everyone, Steven here. Well I just got back to Brooklyn after the last Atlanta show. It was pretty cool to see everyone come out. Its a great end to a great 4 years. We have been planning this move for years now and its nice to finally have it happen. Though we will miss Atlanta, I think we will fit right in here in Brooklyn.

First on the agenda, The Sketchbook Project Monthlies. Yep, that’s right. We are going to have small versions of the sketchbook project going on monthly with a different theme each month. We will have custom Sketchbooks for each month and they will reside in there own section in the library up here! We wanted to get everyone’s opinion on what the first theme should be for March! Let us know by email or sending us a message on twitter or facebook! Each month there will be a limited amount of open spaces, so make sure you check back for the sign up dates!

Hey! Don’t forget to come to our Grand Opening Party on February 26th from 8-11pm! Seriously!

Have a great Saturday everyone. Everyone wish Shane good luck as he drives his 16 foot moving truck up from Atlanta, FULL of all your artwork!

-Steven
